Description-
Muscular dystrophies are a group of genetic diseases categorized by progressive weakness and deterioration of the skeletal or voluntary muscles which control movement. The heart muscles and other involuntary muscles are also affected in forms of muscular dystrophy, and a few forms include other organs also. The symptoms are the result of a weakening of the body's muscles. This weakening is due to the death of the muscle cells and muscle tissues which leads to ongoing muscle wasting and weakness. Muscular dystrophy gets worse over time ultimately. This results in disability, difficulty walking, use of a wheelchair, and the need for leg and hand braces.
Ayurvedic concept-
Ayurveda deliberates this condition as Mamsavatakshaya which is the impairment of Mamsagni (muscle enzyme). It involves unbalanced Vata and subsequent deterioration of muscles and structures connected to it. Ayurvedic management of Muscular Dystrophy treatment will involve confirming proper nutrition to the muscle tissue and to precise the fire component associated with the muscular tissue of the body ensuring appropriate nutrition to the whole body and to the muscles in particular thus maintaining a good range of movement of all the joints of the body and strengthening them. The Ayurvedic therapies include udwertana with steam, abhyanga and swedam, dhanyamla dhara, nasya karma, karna pooranam, snehapanam which is followed by Virechanam, shiro vasti, shiro dhara, sarvanga dhara (Pizhichil), shiro pichu, thalam, navarakizhi, vasti (Mustadi raja yapana vasti), rasayana chikitsa.
